Type: public art installation

Architect: Lot-Ek

Location: Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York

Temporary 3-story tall public art installation at Domino Park comprised of 18 reusable shipping containers supporting a large-scale mural. Central to the design challenge and collaboration with Lot-Ek included contending with wo unique parameters; 1) no permanent modifications to the containers to allow for reuse (no welding or bolting) and 2) no substantial foundation work due to scheduling constraints. Structural scope included analysis of a full structural model, confirmation of the stability of unconventional stacking, and collaborative design of custom non-destructive connectors in coordination with industrial fabricators. Creative use of water-filled tanks within the lower-level containers provided sufficient ballast weight to counter the riverside wind loads with minimal foundations to adhere to all NYC DOB requirements. Hermona and Virginie Stolz (Lot-Ek) co-presented the project at the SEAONY 2022 conference Design Scenarios for a Changing World. Hermona led the Silman structural engineering team as Senior Engineer and Project Manager.
