NJIT Central King Building
Type: historic preservation, adaptive reuse & renovation
Architect: Marvel Architects
Location: Newark, NJ
Reinvigoration of 2 adjoining buildings at the center of NJIT campus serving as space for instruction, research, and convening. Structural scope included new openings in existing masonry walls, several new interior and exterior feature stairs, new openings in existing terracotta waffle slab, new steel framed mezzanines, and new steel diagonal bracing at storefront glazing replacing existing masonry walls. Engineering around the existing antiquated waffle slab system with great care such that the integrity was not compromised was a key component of the architectural collaboration. Hermona led the Silman structural engineering team as Project Engineer and assistant project manager.
